The toy company Wham-O owns the trademark rights to the name Frisbee, but the brand has evolved over the years and become commonplace for all disk-shaped objects that we throw as a game.
The flying-saucer as it was called, was invented in 1948 by the American entrepreneur and inventor alter Frederick Morrison (January 23 1920 – February 9 2010). Thanks to the investment by Warren Franscioni (1917-1974) the first model could be cast in plastic, but the toy was not a success, despite the growing interest in flying saucers. The rights at a later (1955), improved, model was sold in 1957 by Morrison as Pluto Platter to Wham-O, Ed Headrick redesigned and improved it for Wham-O and on January 13, 1957 the first Frisbee was born.
However, William Frisbie with The Frisbie Baking Company (1871-1958) in Bridgeport, Connecticut, produced long before that time cake plates that were purchased by students from schools in New England. As the students discovered that you could throw these discs and they were floating when you did this correctly. The name Frisbee is derived from the name on the bottom of the cake plates: The Frisbie Baking Company.
Nowadays, the Frisbee such an aerodynamic object that the world record for the farthest flung is 250 meters, this distance was cast on April 26, 2002 by Sweden’s Christian Sandstrom in El Mirage, California.
Frisbees are made of different materials, but plastic is a favorite. The size of the most common disc is about 20 inches. The aerodynamic form, the flat top and bend edge are designed so they can be caught by hand without causing injury.
There are special discs being sold that are suitable for dogs to catch. Many dogs seem to have a penchant for catching the floating Frisbee and to not ruin them too fast to be unusable by the teeth of the dog, these special Frisbees were designed. There are also competitions where the goal is not to throw the disc as far as possible, but to let the dog catch the Frisbee. This game has also appeared on the popular Nintendo Wii console.
You can buy frisbees with varying degrees of quality and shape, quality and technology of manufacture of the disc determine the distance that it can be thrown. For the different variants of the Frisbee game there are different sizes for sale, each with its specific properties. Discs with LED lights inside are especially nice when it gets dark, but there is a chance that the disc is not balanced right due to the battery inside and therefore can be thrown less far.
Frisbees with a hole in the center can be thrown further than most ‘normal’ Frisbees, but these are not considered ‘real’ Frisbees.
Today Frisbees are also used for promotional and advertising purposes, so it is possible to have Frisbees be printed on to promote festivals and events.
As with aircraft and other objects with an asymmetrical wing profile, the lift force on a Frisbee is generated by a difference in pressure at the top and bottom of the disc. Wind is not necessary for the Frisbee to fly, this can only bring about change in direction and height of the Frisbees flight.
Because the spin of the Frisbee stabilizes it, it continues to fly straight, if he is thrown horizontally. High quality Frisbees are designed to be stable only if they fly fast, they are intentionally not equally balanced for this. Deformations of the disc ensures that the disc will not go far when it is thrown, so it is important that the disc stay in its original shape.
There are several Frisbee games, including:
- Frisbee DDC (Double Disc Court)
- Disc golf (Frisbee golf variant)
- Durango Boot (pin overthrow with two teams)
- Freestyle Frisbee
- Goaltimate (only played in Germany)
- Guts Frisbee (played by two people)
- Ultimate Frisbee (like basketball)
The Ultimate Frisbee variant is widely played in the United States and Canada, Australia and Japan, the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy and since a long time in Sweden and Finland, but the rising popularity recently is in Eastern Europe.
There are a total of over 65,000 registered players in leagues around the world, but this number is rapidly increasing, especially among young people.
Frisbees at events and parties are increasingly used instead of the football, because there is less physical contact and therefore less chance of injury.
Frisbee is played according to certain rules. The classic Frisbee (Ultimate) rules can be read here: Ultimate Frisbee Rules
The Ultimate European Federation has since 2006 organized every year the “Championships”, these are the championships at the highest level. The national federations enact their best teams down to five Regionals in September, a European region where the best 12-16 teams meet. Of this total the best 24 clubs meet in the finals, the highlight of the season is the beginning of October. In recent years, particularly London’s Clapham and Skogshyddan from Göteborg are a leader in the European Ultimate Championship Series.
